María Ramos was born in Moguer (Huelva, Spain) in 1993 and began her musical studies at the age of ten. In 2015, she obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Performance, specialising in Saxophone, with the highest honours, having studied at the Manuel Castillo Higher Conservatory of Music in Seville and the Rafael Orozco Higher Conservatory of Music in Córdoba.
That same year, she was admitted to the prestigious Conservatorium van Amsterdam, where she completed a Master’s Degree in Classical Saxophone under the guidance of renowned international saxophonist Arno Bornkamp, who has been her main musical influence.
She subsequently specialised in composition with Jonás Bisquert at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam.
As a composer, her works include Guadiana (2018), a piece inspired by Andalusian musical traditions. The work has received international acclaim and has been performed worldwide, including its acclaimed performance at Les Créatives Festival in Geneva, where internationally renowned saxophonist Valentine Michaud performed the piece at Victoria Hall in November 2024.
Her subsequent compositions include Raíces Árabes (2019), Medina Azahara (2020) and Zambra (2025), as well as orchestral reductions and transcriptions of important works from the saxophone repertoire. Among these are A. Glazunov’s Concerto in E-flat major, C. Debussy’s Rapsodie or Marin Marais’s Les Folies d’Espagne. The latter was featured on the album Folies de Baryton (2023), released by the Genuin label and recorded by renowned saxophonist Arno Bornkamp.
In 2020, Ramos published her first Andalusian-inspired work, Guadiana, followed by numerous other compositions published by Adolphe Sax Editions.
Alongside her work as a performer and composer, María Ramos has specialised in flamenco studies, completing a Master’s Degree in Flamencology at the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya (ESMUC).
Her interest in orchestral music has led her to collaborate with orchestras such as the NJO of the Netherlands, the Málaga Philharmonic Orchestra and the Filarmonia Orchestra of Seville, working under conductors including Etienne Siebens, Michael Thomas, Manuel Hernández-Silva and Pablo González, among others.
Ramos has given masterclasses and concerts at major venues throughout Spain and Europe, performing in renowned concert halls such as Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Teatro Real in Madrid or Teatro de la Maestranza in Seville, among others.
She has received several national and international awards, including the Huelva Joven Award 2018 in the Educational Field, presented by the Andalusian Youth Institute; the Women, Education and Culture Award at the 9th Arte de Mujer Gala in 2020; and the Elena Whishaw Award 2022 in the Artistic Field.
In 2026, Ramos obtained a permanent teaching position as a saxophone professor in Andalusia, following an extensive teaching career at institutions including the Conservatory of Toledo and the Victoria Eugenia Royal Conservatory of Music in Granada, among others.
She currently combines her work as a teacher and performer, while actively developing projects aimed at promoting and expanding the contemporary and newly created saxophone repertoire.
